Solving the 5 Most Common Dog Behavior Problems
Even the “best dogs in the world” can develop bad habits. Understanding the root cause of these behaviors is the first step toward a well-behaved companion.
1. Excessive Barking
Most dogs bark for a reason: boredom, fear, or attention-seeking. To solve this, identify the trigger. If it’s boredom, increase their physical and mental exercise. Never yell back; they’ll just think you’re joining in the barking!
2. Destructive Chewing
Puppies chew to explore the world and soothe teething, while adult dogs often chew due to separation anxiety. Provide a variety of chew toys and use “bitter sprays” on furniture to redirect their energy to appropriate items.
3. Pulling on the Leash
Dogs naturally walk faster than humans. To stop the pulling, use a front-clip harness and the “red light, green light” method: the moment the leash goes taut, stop walking. Only move forward when the leash is loose.
4. Resource Guarding
If your dog growls over food or toys, they are showing insecurity. Teach the “trade” command—offer a higher-value treat in exchange for the item they are guarding. This builds trust rather than conflict.
5. Separation Anxiety
This is one of the most challenging issues. Start with short departures (just 5 minutes) and gradually increase the time. Use calming treats or white noise to help them relax while you’re away.
Consistency and positive reinforcement are the keys to success in any training journey.
